It combines the goodness of cheesecake and French toast into one delicious dish.
Ingredients
FRENCH TOAST
4 ounces cream cheese, softened at room temperature
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon heavy cream
1 (1-pound) loaf challah bread or brioche, sliced into 16 slices
CUSTARD
2½ cups whole milk
1/4 cup heavy cream
6 eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Preparation
FOR THE FRENCH TOAST:
Mix together the cream cheese, sugar and heavy cream. Smear a little of the cream cheese mixture on one side of each slice of bread and top it with another slice (you’re basically making 8 sandwiches); set them aside.
FOR THE CUSTARD:
In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt.
TO ASSEMBLE:
1.Preheat oven to 350 F.
2.Butter a casserole dish with a little butter. Place your “sandwiches” in your casserole dish, cutting some up if you need to in order to cover the bottom of the casserole dish.
3.Pour the custard over the bread, cover with some foil and place in the oven.
4.Bake, covered, for 45 minutes, uncover and bake for an additional 45 minutes. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
